When the fluid pressure in the hydraulic system exceeds a predetermined value, the relief valve opens to allow excess fluid to flow out, thereby reducing the pressure within the system and preventing damage to system components.

- Valve Spool or Poppet: Moves to open or close the valve passage based on pressure changes.

- Spring: Applies force to keep the valve closed until the preset pressure is reached.

- Inlet Port: Where pressurized fluid enters the valve.

- Outlet Port: Where excess fluid exits when the valve opens.

How Is it Work

1. Normal Operation: Under normal operating conditions, the spring holds the valve spool tightly against its seat, closing the outlet port.

2. Pressure Build-Up: As the hydraulic system operates, fluid pressure increases.

3. Relief Action: When the pressure reaches the valve's set point, it overcomes the force of the spring, causing the valve spool to move away from its seat and opening the outlet port.

4. Excess Fluid Release: Fluid flows through the outlet port to a reservoir or another part of the system where it can be safely managed.

5. Pressure Reduction: Once the pressure drops below the set point, the spring returns the valve spool to its closed position.

Types of Hydraulic Relief Valves

-Direct Acting Relief Valves: These valves directly use the system pressure to overcome the spring force and open the valve.

- Pilot Operated Relief Valves:These valves use a small pilot valve to control the main valve. They are more sensitive and can handle higher pressures with better precision.
